What is the difference between the VIGI C440 (full-colour) and the VIGI C440I (IR)?
The VIGI C440 uses built-in spotlight LEDs to produce full-colour footage 24 hours a day — including in complete darkness. The VIGI C440I uses infrared LEDs that produce black-and-white footage at night. The C440 is the better choice when colour identification is important (e.g. vehicle colours, clothing); the C440I is better for discreet installations where visible spotlight LEDs are undesirable, or where battery/power consumption is a concern.
What is Active Defence and how does it work?
Active Defence is TP-Link's term for the camera's built-in deterrence capability. When a smart detection event is triggered (such as line crossing or area intrusion), the camera can automatically activate its spotlight LEDs and built-in siren to warn and deter the intruder in real time — without requiring any manual action. This can be configured via the VIGI app or VIGI Security Manager.
Does the 2.8mm lens provide a wide or narrow field of view?
The 2.8mm lens provides a wide field of view — ideal for covering large areas at close to medium range such as car parks, open rooms, building entrances, and retail floors. For longer-distance monitoring of specific points (gates, driveways, corridors), the 4mm lens variant provides a narrower, more focused view.
Can it record without an NVR?
Yes. The VIGI C440 has an onboard microSD card slot for local recording, allowing it to operate as a standalone camera without an NVR. It can also be managed directly via the VIGI app or VIGI Security Manager. For multi-camera installations with centralised recording and playback, a VIGI NVR is recommended.
Is it suitable for outdoor installation?
Yes. The VIGI C440 is rated for outdoor use. Check the product's IP rating for specific weatherproofing details. For permanent outdoor installation in Australian conditions, mount in a sheltered position where possible to maximise longevity and protect the spotlight LEDs.
What NVR is recommended for this camera?
