- Recorder — pick an All-in-One Console (UNVR Instant or Dream Machine SE) with PoE built in, or the UNVR Pro enterprise rack NVR for larger sites. We auto-match the camera count, and when the rack NVR is chosen we add a right-sized UniFi PoE switch to power your cameras.
- Storage — UniFi recorders take their own surveillance drive; set a retention target and we size a surveillance-grade drive (2TB–16TB) to match.

Yes — UniFi Protect cameras record to a UniFi OS Console (UNVR Instant, Dream Machine SE/Pro) or a dedicated UNVR / UNVR Pro network video recorder. There are no monthly fees — recording runs locally on the device’s own drive. This builder matches the recorder to your camera count automatically.
Which UniFi recorder should I choose — Console or UNVR Pro?
An All-in-One Console (UNVR Instant or Dream Machine SE) has PoE ports built in and is ideal for up to 8 cameras — one device powers and records everything. The UNVR Pro is a 7-bay rack NVR with RAID for larger or business sites; it has no on-board PoE, so the builder automatically adds a matching UniFi PoE switch to power your cameras.
How much storage do I need for 30 days of recording?
UniFi Protect uses efficient H.265 encoding. As a rough guide, eight 4MP cameras need around 4–8TB for 30 days depending on scene activity and recording mode. The builder sizes a surveillance-grade drive from your cameras, resolution and retention target. The UNVR Pro supports multiple drives and RAID for redundancy.
