Hikvision HeatPro Bi-Spectrum Thermal
Hikvision DS-2TD1228-7/QA — HeatPro Bi-Spectrum Thermal + Optical Turret Camera with 256×192 Thermal Sensor, 4MP Optical, Fire Detection & Temperature Measurement
The Hikvision DS-2TD1228-7/QA is a bi-spectrum thermal and optical turret camera from Hikvision's HeatPro Series — designed for Australian commercial and industrial sites that need both long-range perimeter detection and early fire / temperature-exception alarms from a single, cost-effective device. A 256 × 192 uncooled VOx thermal sensor paired with a 4 MP (2688 × 1520) optical CMOS gives you two synchronised video streams: the thermal image detects intruders, vehicles, fires and abnormal heat signatures regardless of ambient light; the optical image gives operators the visual confirmation they need to verify the alarm and dispatch a response. Vehicle detection out to 881 m, human detection out to 287 m, and fire detection out to 82.8 m — all on a single PoE 802.3af drop, no special power or cabling required. Backed by 3-year Australian warranty from CCTV Guru.

Why Bi-Spectrum Thermal Is the Right Camera for Certain Sites
A conventional visible-light camera has two problems that a thermal camera solves outright: it can't see through smoke, fog or total darkness, and it can't measure temperature. For sites where early fire detection, perimeter protection out to 287 m in complete darkness, or temperature-based loss prevention matter, a bi-spectrum thermal camera is a targeted tool — not a general-purpose surveillance camera. The DS-2TD1228-7/QA gives you both channels: the thermal camera detects, and the optical camera verifies. When the thermal sensor triggers an alarm on a human at 200 m or a fire at 80 m, the optical channel gives the operator or NVR the colour picture needed to make the response call.
256 × 192 Uncooled VOx Thermal Sensor
Vanadium Oxide Uncooled Focal Plane Arrays with 12 μm pixel pitch, NETD < 40 mK, spectral range 8–14 μm. Uncooled means no maintenance and long life — Hikvision offers a 10-year guarantee on the detector itself.
4 MP (2688 × 1520) Optical Verification Channel
Second sensor is a 1/2.7" progressive-scan CMOS at 4 MP with 120 dB True WDR and 0.0089 lux minimum illumination. Both channels stream simultaneously to the same NVR — operators see the thermal alarm AND the visual context at the same time.
Fire & Smoke Detection Algorithms
Built-in fire detection to 82.8 m and smoking detection to 10.35 m. Useful at warehouses, waste incineration plants, waste-processing sites, manufacturing workshops, timber yards, chemical stores and any site where an ignition source could go unnoticed until it's a serious fire.
Temperature Exception Alarms
Configurable temperature range from −20 °C to +150 °C with ±8 °C accuracy. Set up to 21 measurement rules (10 point rules, 10 area rules, 1 line rule) — alarm when a machine bearing runs hot, when refrigeration fails, when a battery bank overheats, when insulation catches or an exhaust exceeds safe limits.
VCA — Human + Vehicle Classification
Deep-learning video content analysis with line crossing, intrusion, region entrance and region exiting rules (up to 8 in total). Human/vehicle classification to filter out foliage, animals and lighting changes. VCA range up to 144.9 m for vehicles, 55.2 m for humans.
Active Deterrent — White Light + Voice
Built-in 30 m white-light strobe with adjustable flashing frequency and audio alarm with 2 preset voice alerts + 6 importable custom voice alerts. Triggered independently on VCA events or temperature exceptions.
Where This Camera Actually Belongs — Real Australian Use Cases
Waste, Recycling & Landfill Sites
The classic HeatPro use case — early fire detection in waste piles, tyre stockpiles, timber yards, greenwaste and lithium-battery recycling. A hot spot detected at 80 m gives you the time to intervene before it becomes a fire; a conventional camera would only see smoke once combustion is already established.
Construction Sites & Building Yards
Perimeter protection out to 287 m in total darkness. Thermal doesn't need any ambient light, so no floodlights on the site — cheaper on power, less community light-pollution complaints, and no dark corners for someone to hide in.
Warehouses, Manufacturing & Cold Storage
Temperature exception alarms on refrigeration compressors, freezer entrances, battery banks, transformer enclosures and any machinery where an overheat means expensive downtime. Combined with the optical verification channel, you get both the alarm and the visual record.
Substations, Utility & Solar Farms
Unmanned utility sites benefit from long-range perimeter detection and thermal monitoring of critical equipment. Detect an intruder at 287 m or a transformer developing a hot fault — both from one camera on one PoE run.
Villas, Rural Properties & Boundary Fences
Long rural fence lines that a standard optical camera can't monitor. Thermal detects a human at up to 287 m regardless of moon phase, cloud cover or vegetation shadowing.
Parking Lots, Loading Docks & Perimeter Roads
Where the perimeter is longer than a standard IP camera can cover, and where you want vehicle detection to 881 m (with narrow-angle 24.9° thermal lens) — useful at industrial estates, port fringes, mining site entrances and haul-road boundaries.

Recording NVRs — Pair with an M-Series or AcuSeek NVR
The bi-spectrum thermal camera streams two channels (thermal + optical) but only consumes one channel on your NVR via the primary IP stream. Runs on standard PoE 802.3af — plugs directly into any Hikvision NVR PoE port. For thermal metadata (temperature exception events, fire alarms, VCA rules), the M-Series NVRs record everything reliably; the AcuSeek / DeepinMind AI NVRs additionally index the AI metadata for post-incident search.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is "bi-spectrum" and why do I need two sensors?Bi-spectrum = one thermal sensor + one optical (visible-light) sensor in the same housing. The thermal sensor detects at distances and in conditions where a visible camera can't see (total darkness, smoke, fog, glare). The optical sensor verifies — gives you the colour picture needed to identify who or what triggered the alarm. Both stream simultaneously to your NVR.
How accurate is the temperature measurement?±8 °C accuracy across a range of −20 °C to +150 °C. Precise enough for exception alarms (a bearing running 40 °C hot, a battery bank overheating, a waste pile igniting) — but not a substitute for a calibrated industrial pyrometer if you need medical-grade or metrology-grade accuracy. For loss-prevention and fire-prevention use cases, ±8 °C is more than enough.
Will fire detection actually trigger on a small fire at 82.8 m?Yes for a hot spot of at least 0.2 × 0.2 m (per Hikvision's spec). That covers a typical ignition source — a burning cardboard box, a smouldering tyre, a hot piece of lithium-battery debris. A single flickering flame or a lit cigarette is below this threshold — for that, the smoking detection algorithm works up to about 10 m.
What's the low-light performance of the optical channel?0.0089 lux at F1.6 — good for suburban night ambient lighting. Below that, the optical channel uses its 15 m built-in IR illuminator to see; the thermal channel doesn't need any light at all and runs at full detection range 24/7.
Does it run on standard PoE?Yes — PoE 802.3af Class 3 (max 6.5 W). Runs on any Hikvision NVR built-in PoE port, no special injector or Hi-PoE switch needed. Also accepts 12 VDC for solar / battery-powered remote installs.
How high should I mount the camera for the full 287 m human detection range? For maximum detection range along a flat perimeter, mount the camera at 3-4 m height with a slight downward tilt of 5-10°. Higher mounts extend the horizon but reduce the vertical FOV at close range. For fence-line coverage, aim the thermal FOV (24.9°) parallel to the fence — that gives you the longest detection stripe along the line.
Can I integrate this with an existing non-Hikvision VMS?Yes. The camera speaks ONVIF Profile S and Profile G and RTSP for both thermal and optical streams. Compatible with most Australian VMS platforms — Milestone XProtect, Genetec, Exacq, Immix Central Station, etc. Note that some advanced Hikvision-specific analytics (temperature exception metadata) only surface fully on Hikvision NVRs and iVMS-4200.
What warranty covers the thermal detector specifically?Hikvision offers a 10-year guarantee on the thermal detector itself (per the datasheet) — the most expensive part of the camera. The full camera assembly ships with a 3-year Australian Hikvision warranty, serviced back-to-base through Hikvision Australia by CCTV Guru.
