Frequently Asked Questions
Does the EAP650-Outdoor require an Omada Controller?
No. The EAP650-Outdoor can operate in standalone mode for basic Wi-Fi access point functionality without an Omada Controller. An Omada Controller (hardware OC200/OC300 or software-based) is required for centralised multi-AP management, seamless roaming, Omada Mesh, guest portal authentication, and advanced network features. For deployments with more than one AP, a controller is strongly recommended.
What is the difference between PoE+ and Passive PoE for this AP?
802.3at PoE+ is the IEEE standard active PoE — it negotiates power with the AP before supplying voltage and is compatible with any 802.3at-compliant PoE switch or injector. Passive PoE delivers a fixed voltage without negotiation and is only compatible with devices designed for it. The EAP650-Outdoor includes a passive PoE adapter for use where a PoE switch is not available. For professional installations, 802.3at PoE+ from a managed switch is recommended.
What does IP67 mean for outdoor installation in Australia?
IP67 means the enclosure is fully protected against dust ingress (IP6X) and can withstand temporary water immersion up to 1 metre for 30 minutes (IPX7). In practical terms, the EAP650-Outdoor is suitable for all Australian outdoor environments including heavy rain, coastal salt air, and high-humidity tropical conditions. It should be mounted to avoid direct sustained water jets from pressure washers or irrigation systems.
How does Omada Mesh work for outdoor deployments?
Omada Mesh allows EAP650-Outdoor units to wirelessly backhaul data between each other without a physical Ethernet cable between every AP. One AP connects to the network via Ethernet (the root AP), and additional APs connect wirelessly through the mesh. This is ideal for extending outdoor Wi-Fi coverage to areas where running Ethernet cable is impractical — such as across car parks, sports fields, or between buildings. A wired backhaul is always preferred for performance; mesh is best used where cabling is not feasible.
Can the EAP650-Outdoor be used indoors?
Yes. The EAP650-Outdoor is rated for both indoor and outdoor use. Its IP67 housing makes it suitable for harsh indoor environments such as warehouses, food processing facilities, and industrial spaces where dust, moisture, or washdown conditions are present. For standard indoor office or retail environments, a ceiling-mount indoor AP such as the EAP670 or EAP655-Wall may be more appropriate.
