Camera Photo Notifications: Dahua, Hikvision, UNV, Tapo & UniFi
Compare camera push alerts, event snapshots and phone photo previews across DMSS, Hik-Connect, UNV-Link, Tapo and UniFi Protect, with setup checks and subscription considerations.
A camera alert and a photo preview are different features. A standard push notification tells you that an event happened. A rich notification includes an image so you can assess the event before opening live view or playback. Check this feature separately when choosing a camera or kit.
How do Dahua, Hikvision and UNV notifications compare?
There are three things to distinguish: a push alert arriving on your phone, an event picture available after opening the app, and an image displayed directly in the phone’s notification banner or lock screen. Support for one does not automatically confirm the others. Menu names can change with app and firmware updates.

Event subscriptions by alarm type and camera channel; alarm-event pictures, live view and recorded video in the app. |
Confirm snapshot configuration and test the actual phone notification. An in-app event picture is not proof of a lock-screen image. |

HikvisionHik-Connect
|
Device alarm notifications and schedules; event details can include pictures and recorded footage when the corresponding device linkage is configured. |
Check picture capture, image-encryption access and the intended phone/app version. Do not assume every device produces the same banner. |

Device/app alarm permissions and a Report Snapshot option for devices supporting alarm snapshots. |
Enable the snapshot function and alarm rules on the camera/NVR first, then Report Snapshot. Test how the notification is displayed on your phone. |

Dahua: setting up notifications in DMSS
DMSS lets you subscribe to selected event types and channels. Configure the relevant detection or alarm rule on the camera/recorder first; an app subscription cannot create an event that the device is not detecting.
- In DMSS, open the device menu, then Device Details.
- Open Multi-channel Alarm Subscription or the notification settings offered by your device.
- Enable notifications, choose the alarm types and camera channels, review the permitted times and save.
- Allow DMSS notifications in the phone’s settings and trigger a test event.
Dahua’s manual describes viewing event pictures, recorded video and live video from alarm messages. Picture and recording availability depend on the device’s event actions and recording setup. If a photo in the unopened phone notification is essential, ask for a demonstration with the proposed camera/NVR and your phone.
Hikvision: setting up notifications in Hik-Connect
- Configure the required event on the camera or NVR, including event-picture capture and recording actions where supported.
- Open the device settings in Hik-Connect and enable Alarm Notification.
- Review the notification schedule and any silenced mode; enable the app’s push setting where offered.
- Allow Hik-Connect notifications on the phone, then test the event.
Hik-Connect’s event-details guide supports viewing and saving event pictures and opening related playback when the corresponding linkage actions are configured. Encrypted event pictures can require the device verification code. These are in-app capabilities, not a universal promise of photo previews in every iPhone or Android notification banner.
If alerts are missing, see our Hik-Connect notification troubleshooting guide. For purchase advice, specify whether you need an image before opening the app.
UNV: setting up alarm snapshots in UNV-Link
- Configure the alarm rule and snapshot function on the UNV camera or NVR.
- In UNV-Link, open the device’s settings and enable Receive Alarm Message.
- Under Allow Alarm Notifications, enable Allow Device Alarms and Allow App Notifications.
- Enable Report Snapshot where the device supports alarm snapshots, and check the notification schedule.
- Allow UNV-Link notifications in the phone’s settings and test a real event.
UNV’s guide explicitly describes sending snapshots with alarm notifications. The device must support the function, and alarm/snapshot setup is required. Check the exact image presentation on the intended phone; an attached alarm snapshot does not establish identical lock-screen behaviour across all phones. Older EZView installations have different menus, so follow the instructions for the app actually in use.
Test before choosing a system
Ask for a real event demonstration on the intended phone: first with the screen locked, then with the notification expanded, and finally after opening the event in the app. Confirm whether pictures, playback and the required event type work with the quoted camera and recorder. Check any account, cloud-service or subscription requirements separately; do not carry Tapo’s plan rules over to another brand.
Do Tapo cameras offer photo notifications?
TP-Link’s Australian notification guide describes Rich Notifications as requiring Tapo Care. Its Australian Tapo Care comparison lists instant notifications without a subscription, while notifications with snapshots are a paid-plan feature. Features can vary by camera model, firmware and plan, so confirm the Australian offering for the exact camera before purchase. Do not assume that free app access or local microSD recording includes photo previews.
The Tapo C212 indoor Wi-Fi camera is one relevant model to discuss. TP-Link includes C212 in its notification guide’s supported-device list. This is not a promise that every feature is included with every hardware version or subscription.
Where are Tapo notification settings?
- Open the camera in the Tapo app and enter its settings.
- Open Notifications and enable Activity Notifications.
- Check Rich Notifications and the applicable Tapo Care requirement.
- Review the notification schedule and available event types, then test an event on the phone you intend to use.
Some models do not offer the same event-type options. Phone notification permission must also be enabled.
What should I check for UniFi Protect?
UniFi Protect supports configurable push and email alerts through Alarm Manager. Ubiquiti documents selecting the trigger, device scope and users to notify, with delivery preferences managed per user. Those alert settings alone do not confirm how a photo preview will appear on your particular phone.
If an image on the lock screen is essential, ask for confirmation with the proposed camera, Protect console, software versions and iPhone or Android device. Request a demonstration of the actual notification, including what appears before and after expanding it. Browse UniFi CCTV kits as system options to assess, rather than assuming identical notification behaviour across every kit.
What should you ask before buying?
- Is the alert text-only, a still-image preview or a video preview?
- Which camera, recorder or console and mobile app versions were tested?
- Is a subscription required, and which features remain when a trial ends?
- Will the required event, such as a person or doorbell press, trigger that notification?
- Does it work on the intended phone with its notification and privacy settings?
Send the proposed model numbers, phone type and the notification behaviour you want to CCTV Guru. Please omit passwords and customer footage. For missing Hikvision alerts, use our separate Hik-Connect notification troubleshooting guide; restoring an alert and confirming photo-preview support are separate checks.
