Description
TP-Link SM311LS 1000Base-LX SFP Single-Mode LC Transceiver (10km)
Gigabit Single-Mode Fibre Connectivity Up to 10km
The TP-Link SM311LS is a 1000Base-LX SFP (Mini-GBIC) transceiver module designed for Gigabit Ethernet connections over single-mode fibre at distances up to 10km. Operating at 1310nm and compliant with IEEE 802.3z, it is hot-pluggable and compatible with TP-Link JetStream and Smart switches, as well as any SFP MSA-compliant device. An essential component for inter-building fibre links, campus networks, and long-distance switch uplinks across Australian commercial and enterprise installations.
Key Features
- 1000Base-LX — Gigabit Ethernet over single-mode fibre at up to 10km
- 1310nm wavelength — standard for single-mode long-range fibre applications
- LC/UPC duplex connector — industry-standard fibre interface
- IEEE 802.3z compliant — interoperable with standard Gigabit fibre infrastructure
- SFP MSA compliant — compatible with any MSA-standard SFP port
- Hot-pluggable — insert or remove without powering down the switch
- Compatible with TP-Link JetStream and Smart switches including TL-SG3210, TL-SG3216, TL-SG3424, TL-SG2210P, TL-SG2216, TL-SG2424, TL-SG2452, MC220L, and more
Use Cases
-
Inter-Building Fibre Links: Connect switches across separate buildings on a campus or commercial site using existing single-mode fibre infrastructure up to 10km.
-
Switch Uplinks: Provide Gigabit fibre uplinks between access and distribution layer switches in enterprise or commercial network deployments.
-
IP Surveillance Backbones: Deliver reliable Gigabit fibre connectivity between NVRs, PoE switches, and core switches across large sites.
-
Network Upgrades: Add fibre uplink capability to existing TP-Link managed switches without replacing the switch hardware.
-
Long-Distance Connections: Suitable for any application requiring Gigabit connectivity beyond the 100m limit of copper Ethernet cabling.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between 1000Base-LX and 1000Base-SX?
1000Base-LX (Long-range) uses 1310nm wavelength and single-mode fibre for distances up to 10km. 1000Base-SX (Short-range) uses 850nm wavelength and multi-mode fibre for distances up to 550m (OM3). Use the SM311LS where your fibre runs exceed 550m or where single-mode fibre is already installed.
What fibre cable do I need?
The SM311LS requires single-mode fibre (9/125 µm) with LC/UPC duplex connectors. Multi-mode fibre is not compatible with this module. Ensure both ends of the fibre link use the same connector type and polish (UPC or APC).
Is the SM311LS compatible with non-TP-Link switches?
Yes. The SM311LS is SFP MSA compliant and is designed to work in any switch or device with a standard SFP port. Compatibility with specific third-party switches may vary — check your switch vendor’s compatibility list or test in your environment.
Can I hot-swap the transceiver without rebooting the switch?
Yes. The SM311LS is hot-pluggable and can be inserted or removed while the switch is powered on without disrupting other ports or requiring a reboot.
Do I need one or two SM311LS modules for a fibre link?
You need one SM311LS module at each end of the fibre link — one installed in each switch. A single module only provides one end of the connection.
