Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need Wi-Fi 7 devices to benefit from the Deco BE85?
No. The Deco BE85 is fully backward compatible with Wi-Fi 6E, Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 5, and older devices. All existing devices will connect and benefit from the improved network management and reduced congestion. However, to take full advantage of Wi-Fi 7 features such as MLO and 320MHz channels, you will need Wi-Fi 7 client devices.
What is Multi-Link Operation (MLO)?
MLO is the defining new feature of Wi-Fi 7. It allows a device to simultaneously send and receive data across multiple frequency bands (e.g. 5GHz and 6GHz at the same time), which dramatically reduces latency and improves reliability compared to Wi-Fi 6E, where a device can only use one band at a time.
Does the Deco BE85 work with NBN?
Yes. The Deco BE85 is compatible with all Australian NBN connection types, including FTTP, FTTN, FTTB, FTTC, and HFC, when connected to your NBN modem or gateway. For multi-gigabit NBN plans, use the 10G WAN port for maximum throughput.
What cable do I need for the 10G port?
The 10G RJ45 port supports Cat6A cabling for distances up to 100 metres at 10Gbps. Cat6 cabling may also work at shorter distances. For best results, Cat6A is recommended.
Can I add more Deco BE85 units to extend coverage?
Yes. The Deco BE85 is part of TP-Link’s expandable Deco ecosystem. Additional units can be added via the Deco app at any time to extend coverage to larger properties.
Is wired backhaul supported?
Yes. Connecting Deco BE85 units via Ethernet provides the most stable and highest-performance backhaul. The 10G port can be used for 10G wired backhaul between units for maximum mesh performance.
What is TP-Link HomeShield?
HomeShield is TP-Link’s built-in network security suite powered by Trend Micro. It includes real-time threat detection, IoT device protection, parental controls with content filtering, and network health reports. Basic features are free; advanced features require a HomeShield Pro subscription.
