Frequently asked questions

How far can a PoE extender reach?
Extenders add roughly 100m per hop — stack a few, or use fibre/wireless for very long distances.

Do they need power?
PoE extenders are typically powered by the PoE line itself.

NDAA Compliant • Inline PoE Distance ExtenderAxis T8129 PoE Extender (5025-281) — Push Ethernet and PoE Past the 100 m Limit Ethernet stops at 100 m. The AXIS T8129 PoE Extender is a pocket-sized inline repeater that fixes that without a switch cabinet, a fibre run, or a local power point. Fit one every 100 m along the Cat5e or Cat6 cable and both data and PoE carry on down the line — depending on the camera and power source, total runs of 200 to 400 m are achievable. It draws its own power from the passing PoE, so no additional power supply is required, and full-rate network throughput is maintained across the whole extended distance. REACH Up to 400 m total POE STANDARDS 802.3af & 802.3at POWER SUPPLY None required PORTS 2 x RJ45, plug-and-play A Repeater That Fits In Your Palm Traditionally a long cable run means dropping in a switch as a repeater — which means a cabinet, a power outlet and another managed device on the network. The T8129 does the same job in a 105 x 40 x 22 mm, 45 g module that hides in a ceiling void or junction box. Both RJ45 ports self-configure for link speed, duplex and crossover, so there is nothing to set up: cut the cable in, plug both ends in, and the camera at the far end powers up from the same PoE switch or midspan that was already feeding the run. LEDs built into the RJ45 connectors show PoE enabled (green) and link/activity (yellow) for quick fault-finding. No Local Power Needed The extender is fed by the passing PoE and forwards inline power to the device downstream. No power point, no injector, no separate supply at the mid-point. Full-Rate Throughput 10/100 Mbps half or full duplex is maintained across the entire extended distance — the extender does not throttle the link. Chain Them for Distance Add one extender per additional 100 m. A 5 W fixed camera can sit up to 400 m from the switch using three units; a 25 W PTZ can typically reach 200 m using one. Works Across the Axis Range Compatible with all Axis network video products with PoE, supporting both IEEE 802.3af and IEEE 802.3at power sources. Maximum Distance From the Switch Axis publishes the following maximum distances, measured over 24 AWG or heavier Cat5e/Cat6 cable, with one extender added every 100 m. Actual results depend on operating conditions. In practice total runs of 200 to 400 m are achievable depending on the powered device and the PoE source — a low-power camera under 6 W on a PoE+ switch can reach 400 m using three extenders. Does it need its own power supply? No. The extender is powered by the PoE passing through it and forwards inline power to the device downstream. That is the main reason it suits mid-span locations with no power outlet. Which PoE standards does it support?IEEE 802.3af and IEEE 802.3at. Axis also lists it as compatible with High PoE 60 W sources for certain device classes — check the range table above, as High PoE devices are only supported from a 60 W midspan and at up to 200 m. How many ports does it have? Two shielded RJ45 ports. Both configure themselves automatically for link speed, duplex and crossover, so there is no in/out orientation to worry about and nothing to configure. What data rate does it support?10/100 Mbps, half or full duplex, and full-rate throughput is maintained over the whole extended distance. It is not a Gigabit device. Can I install it outdoors? No. The T8129 is rated for indoor use only and has no IP rating. For outdoor mid-span locations, Axis offers the T8129-E Outdoor PoE Extender instead. What cable should I use?Shielded category 5 or higher. For the longest published distances, use 24 AWG or heavier Cat5e/Cat6, and for full-power PoE/PoE+ devices at 200 m use 23 AWG or heavier — typically Cat6. Can I chain multiple extenders?Yes. Fit one every 100 m of cable. Up to three units are commonly used to reach 400 m with a low-power camera; higher-draw devices reduce the achievable distance. Will it work with cameras from other brands? It is designed for and tested with Axis network video products, but it operates as a standard 802.3af/at inline extender. Verify the powered device's class and wattage against the range table before ordering. Genuine Axis Warranty Fast AU-Wide Shipping AU Tech Support
